What is pelvic floor and obstetric physical therapy?
Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized type of physical therapy to help rehabilitate those experiencing problems involving the pelvis. These could vary from problems involving the bladder, bowels, organs within the pelvis, and pain including back pain, hip pain, pelvic pain, or abdominal pain. Obstetric physical therapy is the same type of therapy but for pregnant women.
For your convenience, appointments with Embrace Health and Rehab are held in the privacy of your own home at a time that works for you. Your therapist will bring all of the necessary supplies. Dress comfortably and have an area in which the assessment will be performed. All forms and instructions will be emailed to you prior to the first session.
The first visit lasts between one to two hours and consists of a discussion where your story and concerns are heard. Questions are asked regarding your medical and surgical history, childbirth history, activity level, etc. Assessment depends on your specific needs and may consist of a posture screen, tests for walking and balance, breathing assessment, range of motion of joints, strength testing, palpation of affected tissues, internal and/or external palpation of pelvic floor muscles to assess for pain and prolapse and how well you can contract and relax the muscles used for bowel and bladder control and mobility assessments (watching how you use your body to perform daily tasks that may be contributing to your problem). We also focus on your perceived level of stress, nutritional habits and sleep patterns, all the aspects of life that affect our bodies.
Medications and surgery are not always the answer. Learn how to move and use your body in better ways for healing and injury prevention. Take an active part in your recovery with physical therapy.
